St Michael's Assembly Hall Refurbishment

Our Building Surveying team have recently completed a refurbishment and modernisation scheme of the Assembly Hall at St Michael’s CE High School in Chorley.

Prior to the works, the Assembly Hall, which includes a large balcony area, hadn’t been refurbished for 60 years and extensions around the hall had taken a lot of natural light away from the space. The appearance had become dated, rather gloomy, and uninspiring in appearance.

The brief from our client was to carry out a full refurbishment to create a light, bright and modern centrepiece for the school.

St Michael's Assembly Hall Refurbishment

The project entailed full a full upgrade of the mechanical and electrical installations, including installation of air conditioning, electrical rewiring, new general lighting and stage lighting, a modern sound system and compete refurbishment of the fabric including new balcony seating and glass balcony front, new sound desk, ceilings, and curtains, etc. The old portal frame was boxed-in and the whole of the air conditioning installation was concealed in the walls, whilst maintaining access for maintenance to provide an uncluttered, clean, modern space for the school.

The Assembly Hall is used daily throughout term time, and is integral to the school, so health, safety and safeguarding was a major concern. Logistics were difficult in this respect, so the works need to be carefully planned to achieve the delivery of the project in a busy school environment. The delivery programme involved undertaking the work in phases during three separate holiday periods and utilising evening shifts to ensure disruption to the school was kept to a minimum. The pupils and teaching staff were able to continue to use the hall throughout term time.

Our Building Surveyors and education specialists are adept in finding creative and practical solutions to projects such as this – both in terms of finish/appearance/fit-out and also delivery/logistics/safety.
