Works have commenced on site for Phase 2 of the expansion project at Little Lever School, Bolton. Following the completion of an extension to the existing school under Phase 1, Phase 2 will deliver a new detached teaching block as part of the wider expansion.

The project is being driven by Bolton Council’s need for additional school places across the borough. Little Lever School has agreed to accommodate 30 additional pupils each year over five years, increasing its capacity by 150 pupils overall.

The new-build, detached, two-storey block will provide nine classrooms, a new visitor entrance and new school bus access and egress, in line with the approved plans.

The new building will also incorporate the main entrance and reception for the whole school, significantly improving the frontage and overall appearance of the original 1970s school building from Church Street. External works will include revised visitor parking, improved pedestrian access and landscaping.

A temporary modular block containing classrooms and teaching space has been demolished to make way for the development, with this accommodation also needing to be replaced as part of the expansion.

Lea Hough has been working on the project for around two years to bring it to the construction stage, including obtaining planning approval. Phase 2 is a larger and more complex project, with challenges including historic mine workings beneath and close to the site, as well as managing construction on a busy school site while Little Lever School remains open and operational.

To deliver the project, we have brought together a Design Team of specialist consultants and sub-consultants, with Lea Hough acting as Project Manager on behalf of Lever Academy Trust.

We are also working closely with Capital Programme Managers at Bolton Council, which has provided grant funding for the project.

The project team comprises:

  • Project Manager: Lea Hough Chartered Surveyors
  • Main Contractor: Hargreaves Contracting Limited
  • Architect: ABW Architects
  • Quantity Surveyor: Donald Lomax & Partners
  • Structural/Civil Engineer: PWA Group
  • Landscape Architect: Milieu Landscape Design
  • Mechanical & Electrical Engineer: Rosiben Limited

Works are intended to be completed by August 2027, and we look forward to seeing this exciting construction project take shape.

Further updates will be shared on our website as the project progresses.
