Lea Hough has been involved in the successful completion of a project in Burnley town centre that has seen the restoration of a shop front as part of a wider heritage renovation project. The property on St James Street in Burnley is the first of a set of planned building renovation works in Burnley’s Heritage Action Zone – which is to be part-funded by Historic England.

Works on the building involved reinstatement of the traditional shopfront, including reinstatement of its sliding sash windows, stone cleaning, stone repairs, repointing works, replacement of lead gutters, lime rendering works, chimney rebuild and reroofing works.

The team at Lea Hough has been involved at every stage of the works – from carrying out an initial inspection of the property through to undertaking the design, drawings, specification and tendering process for the project.

From there, our team also oversaw the works from start to finish in a contract administration capacity.

Due to the property being located in a Conservation Area, both Planning Approval and Building Regulations approval were required.

The renovation project is part of a wider series of works planned for the area. Burnley Borough Council has been successful in securing £1.2 million from Historic England for a Heritage Action Zone (HAZ). Gareth Clarke, Chartered Surveyor at Lea Hough and the lead on this project commented:

“There are always challenges to overcome when working on heritage buildings, and this was particularly the case here due to the neglected nature of the property concerned. However, this often makes for a more satisfying end result!

“This is certainly the case with the St James Street renovation – I am over the moon with how it has turned out.

“Coming from Burnley myself, this project has been of particular interest. It’s very exciting to see the many traditional features being reinstated in the Burnley Town Centre Conservation Area and I look forward to working on other projects over the coming months as the roll out of the Burnley Heritage Action Zone continues.”
