PFI School surveyor

Lea Hough’s Education Team are currently busy delivering a number of building upgrade projects in relation to schools that were built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

Around 25 years ago, many schools were constructed under the PFI Scheme.

The PFI schemes were a collaboration between the Department for Education, Local Authorities and a main developer/contractor.

These PFI schools generally had a 25 year contract in place with the original developer, during which time the developer would maintain the schools for a period of 25 years. Consequently, a lot of these 25 year contracts are now nearing the end, and the school buildings need to be handed over in a shipshape and well-maintained condition.

The PFI hand-back process at the end of the 25 year term can be complicated, dependent upon the contractual basis of the PFI Agreement at a particular school.

Ordinarily, the main PFI contractor would carry out any necessary repair projects prior to handing the school over at the end of the 25 year term.

However, we have been appointed to assist the Local Authority, and the Department for Education, to help to deliver a number of repair/renewal/upgrading schemes to PFI schools prior to the hand back date.

As an experienced School Building Consultant, Lea Hough have been approached to provide assistance, on the basis that we will be able to deliver the hand back projects promptly, prior to the handover date. We also hope to be able to obtain better value for money.

We look forward to continuing to work with our clients on the PFI schemes, in conjunction with the DFE, to deliver these much needed repair schemes prior to PFI hand-back.
