The internal remodelling and refurbishment project at the Brooklands Building at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS) in Blackburn is nearing completion. The full-scale redevelopment of The Brooklands Building, a former nursing home, commenced in April 2024.
Background:
The Brooklands Building, located on the QEGS’ campus, was identified as being suitable for redevelopment to help the school increase the numbers of pupils on its roll.
In order to transform the building into a modern day teaching block, a major wholescale refurbishment was required.
Project Scope:
The project has encompassed a comprehensive internal remodelling and refurbishment, addressing key areas such as:
Reconfiguration: The layout of the building has been optimised to enhance collaborative learning and accommodate flexible teaching styles.
Upgrades to facilities: The Brooklands Building has undergone significant improvements to its electrical, heating and plumbing systems, to enhance efficiency going forwards.
Accessibility and safety: The renovation work has paid special attention to improving accessibility and safety measures throughout the building, in particular fire safety.
Enhanced aesthetics: The Brooklands Building now boasts a fresh and contemporary internal appearance, creating a visually appealing and stimulating environment for students and staff.
Additional space: The disused second floor will be brought back into use, and the basement is also being damp-proofed and used as a plant room and storage.
Timeline:
Lea Hough’s team have been involved from the outset, from reviewing feasibility ideas and providing budget estimate costs, right through to obtaining Building Regulations approval and overseeing the tender process.
Work on site commenced in April 2024 and is on track for completion in September 2024. The dedication and hard work of the project team, including contractors and subcontractors, have contributed to the smooth execution of the project.
We look forward to being able to share photographs of the completed project over the coming weeks.
