Lea Hough are currently managing a scheme over the summer holidays, to replace the heating system at Ellesmere Port Church of England College. The college is part of the Frank Field Education Trust.
The college is a multi-storey, modern teaching building, only twelve years old, but the original gas-source heat pumps had failed and were obsolete.
The condemned, obsolete gas-source heat pumps, which previously provided the heating and cooling, required urgent replacement.
After consideration of options for a suitable solution, working closely with sub-consultant mechanical engineers, Lea Hough obtained tender prices from contractors, and then we submitted a funding application on behalf of the college to the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). A substantial CIF Funding grant was awarded for the project in May and, following careful planning and liaising with the college’s FM / operations team and the appointed contractor, the work commenced on site in July.
The defunct old heat pumps had to be craned off the currently being replace with modern Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP’s) which are much more efficient, environmentally friendly, and will reduce the carbon footprint.
A crane had to be brought to site during the summer holidays, to remove the old heat pumps from upon the roof, and to lift up the new Mitsubishi ASHP’s up onto the roof.
As well as the replacement of the heat pumps, a larger sized electrical supply was needed to be installed to the roof plant, to provide a supply for the new heating plant, and upgrades are being undertake to the BMS panel and problematic manifolds.
This work is all being undertaken in a ten week period, centred around the college’s summer holiday period. The heating should be restored to the college by September, meaning that the college’s staff and pupils will not need to endure another freezing cold winter without heating in many rooms.
The scheme will also reduce costs significantly in respect of heating bills, as well as repairs and maintenance costs, and will provide much more comfortable learning environment for the pupils and teaching staff.
Lea Hough have been managing the project through from initial condition surveys, preparation of proposed solution, detailed drawings and tender documents, preparation of funding bid, as well as Principal Designer, CDM advisor, and Contract Administrator throughout the project.
If you are a school / academy / college who is interested in obtaining CIF Funding to remedy your problematic heating system, please get in touch and we will advise whether we can assist you in obtaining funding.
