A new round of funding applications for the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) for 2023/24 has been launched by the Department for Education (DfE).

The CIF allows eligible schools and sixth form colleges to apply for capital grants for repair, improvement and a small number of expansion projects.

Key dates to note for the 2023/24 CIF funding round are:

  • Deadline for new applicant to register – 12 noon, 1 December 2022.
  • Deadline for submissions – 12 noon, 7 December 2022.
  • Successful applicants will be notified in Spring 2023.

Criteria for 2023-24

The focus of the CIF fund is to keep school and college buildings safe and in good working order. Eligible schools that have issues with poor building condition, building compliance, energy efficiency or health and safety are urged to apply for CIF funding.

As in previous years, projects that address compliance and health and safety issues will be given the highest priority. New for 2023, bids that include the replacement of expired oil and coal boilers with low carbon alternatives will also be classed as priority projects. Submissions that address structural safety, fire protection systems, gas safety, electrical safety or emergency asbestos removal will also be considered high priority. The next level of priority is then given to projects that ensure weather tightness of buildings and other projects for continuous heating and water supply.

Apply for CIF Funding in 2023/24

As one of the most highly anticipated funding rounds available within the education sector, coupled with the ‘cost of living crisis’ affecting school budgets, applications for this year’s CIF are expected to be even more competitive than in previous years.

Due to the high demand for CIF funding, only schools that are able to display and evidence high project need are likely to be successful.

Lea Hough’s School Building Consultants have an excellent track record of helping schools to apply for and obtain CIF funding.
