Following the recent announcement of the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) 2026/27 outcomes, many schools across the country are now reviewing their applications and considering their next steps.
While many projects secured approval in this year’s funding round, some schools will understandably be disappointed not to have achieved the outcome they had hoped for. However, for certain applications, there may still be an opportunity to challenge the decision through the official appeals process.
The Department for Education has confirmed that the deadline for CIF 2026/27 appeals is 12 noon on Friday 12 June 2026.
When Should a School Consider an Appeal?
An appeal is not an opportunity to submit an entirely new application or introduce a completely different project. Instead, appeals are generally considered where schools believe:
- Important information may have been overlooked
- There has been a factual or technical error in the assessment
- The application was not scored in line with the supporting evidence submitted
- Clarification is required regarding the condition or compliance risk presented
Schools should carefully review the feedback provided by the DfE before deciding whether an appeal is appropriate.
In our experience, successful appeals are typically those supported by clear technical evidence and a well-structured justification that directly addresses the reasons for rejection.
Common Reasons CIF Applications Are Unsuccessful
CIF remains an extremely competitive funding programme, with demand for funding consistently exceeding the available budget. Even well-prepared applications can sometimes miss out.
However, if you believe a material error has been made, it’s important to act fast. The CIF appeals window is relatively short, meaning schools should seek advice promptly if they are considering submitting an appeal.
Preparing a robust appeal often requires reviewing the original application in detail, analysing assessor feedback and gathering additional supporting evidence where permitted.
Leaving this process until the final few days can significantly reduce the opportunity to prepare a strong submission.
Lea Hough Chartered Surveyors has extensive experience supporting schools with both CIF applications and appeals. We have a track record of success of appealing CIF results for a number of school clients.
Even where an appeal is not ultimately pursued, reviewing the outcome can often provide valuable insight ahead of future funding rounds.
Schools considering a CIF 2026/27 appeal are encouraged to seek professional advice as soon as possible ahead of the 12 noon deadline on Friday 12 June 2026.
