As pupils go back to school for the start of the new academic year, several schools across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Warrington, and Staffordshire can look forward to returning to upgraded and improved facilities!
The summer break is always one of the busiest times in the education sector for building and refurbishment works, with schools taking advantage of the extended closure period to progress major projects. This year has been no exception, and our team has been proud to assist in delivering a wide range of projects through the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), as well as other Department for Education (DfE) capital funding streams.
The CIF continues to be a major source of funding for school estate improvements. Over the past year, we’ve successfully secured funding and delivered numerous large-scale projects, including:
- Re-roofing (flat and pitched roofs)
- Heating system replacements
- Electrical re-wiring
- Window replacement schemes
- Safeguarding and security fencing upgrades
- Underground drainage system improvements
These schemes are vital in ensuring schools remain safe, warm, dry, and compliant – helping to reduce the risk of unexpected closures and costly emergency repairs.
SCA and SSICB Funded Projects
In addition to CIF, we are also delivering projects through School Condition Allocations (SCA) – covering kitchen refurbishments, roofing, electrical upgrades, heating system replacements, and safeguarding improvements.
A standout scheme this year is a major SSICB-funded project at a school in Cumbria, involving re-roofing, heating replacement, concrete repairs, steel roof truss re-coating, electrical upgrades, and asbestos removal. This package of works will futureproof the site for years to come.
Supporting the DfE and Local Authorities
Beyond direct school-led projects, our expertise is also being used to support wider estate management. We are currently working with the DfE and a local authority on the upgrade of a PFI school, as part of the PFI handback process. This ensures the school estate is handed back in good condition and meets long-term requirements.
Expansion and SEND Projects
Alongside essential maintenance, we’ve also been working with schools on strategic expansion projects to help them cater for increasing pupil numbers. Extensions are vital to create additional teaching space to meet growing demand.
Another key focus has been supporting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Several schools have benefitted from bespoke remodelling and refurbishment projects, creating modern, fit-for-purpose facilities designed to provide specialist learning environments for SEND pupils.
Early Years and Self-Funded Refurbishments
This summer has also seen the handover of a fully refurbished Nursery and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) area, including upgraded toilet facilities. These improvements are vital in giving the youngest pupils a safe, engaging, and practical learning environment from day one.
Alongside externally funded works, we’ve supported schools that have chosen to self-fund refurbishment projects, helping them plan and deliver schemes such as toilet refurbishments, redecoration, and classroom upgrades.
Looking Ahead – CIF 2025/26
As schools settle into the autumn term, our attention is already turning towards the next round of CIF applications. The fund remains one of the most important opportunities for academies and sixth form colleges to secure vital investment in their estates. With competition for funding high, early preparation is key.
At Lea Hough, we have a strong track record of success in securing CIF funding and delivering high-quality projects that make a real difference to pupils and staff. From feasibility studies and bid writing to project management and handover, we provide comprehensive support throughout the process.
